Trend Alert: Blue Light Glasses

All over social media I have been seeing celebrities and influencers rocking the new glasses trend– blue light blocking lenses. I had to check it out for myself and see.. is it all hype or are we on to something?

I wore blue light blocking glasses for two weeks and here is what I have found.

They come in all types of frame styles and colours, a distinct departure from the unattractive yellow lenses computer glasses. From Amazon to Quay and beyond, brands are jumping on the bandwagon. I first saw them in Kylie Jenner, sporting these pairs below (linked when you tap the images).

So…Is it a fad or is it an investment in our eye health?

My first pair were just $15 so I didn’t mind the small investment to do my own personal research. I’ll be y’alls guinea pig any day, ha ha. I’ve made a point of using them when I’m on my laptop and as much as I can when I am on phone in the evening, since that’s usually my only free time in a day once the kids are asleep. I’ve heard that the blue light can affect your sleep quality, and having a baby it already isn’t great so there’s nothing but up, right?

After a week I feel like I have less eye strain and have less difficulty falling asleep. You’d think with a 2 month old and busy toddler I could fall asleep anywhere, anytime, right? That hasn’t been the case and I’ll waste precious time waiting for the sandman to come take me away to dreamland. So annoying! I’m hoping with consistent use of these glasses my head will hit the pillow and I will be K-O’d.

I decided to dive down the Google rabbit hole and research this.

According to AllAboutVision.com, “blue light penetrates all the way to the retina (the inner lining of the back of the eye) [and] laboratory studies have shown that too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina. This causes changes that resemble those of macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss.”

Other studies also show that too much exposure to blue light impacts sleep cycles through the suppressed secretion of melatonin due to artificial light.

For those of you who spend a good deal of your working hours on your computer, to come home and spend your free time looking at the tv or your phone, or you just Netflix and chill in the evenings, these could definitely help your eye health in the long run.
